From 15th to 21st on the border control station in Medyka (Polish - Ukrainian border) automatic border control with the use of ducuments with biometric data was tested. It was the first such system, that was tested at the outer EU border.
Automatic border control is possible in the case of travelers that have documents with biometric data (passes or MRG permits for small border traffic). Control system compares two biometric features (face and fingerprints) taken from the traveler with data stored in the document and decides, if the person using them is the correct person. It allows also to check the traveler records in the data bases of SIS, VIS and other. Biometric comparison makes the use of foreign or false documents impossible.
The whole system was created within the framework of the project with the goal to increase the security and defensibility of the sate. The project leader was INSTITUTE OF OPTOELECTRONICS MILITARY UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY in Warsaw. Optel delivered ultrasonic fingerprint readers. Project was financed by the National Center for Research and Development.
